i think vista probably defaults to about 40 ish tasks for the whole machine, (not just for the user theres 2 settings (show from user and show from whole machine) you can probably add on 5 or 6 for drivers and driver apps, and antivirus/fireall may add some ( 4 if its a good antivirus and a crapload if its a bad one) punkbuster adds 2 but sometimes only 1 is running (the way it should be)
xp needs 16 to run,by the time i have drivers and all necessary software installed and windows live messenger (2 tasks) 2 drivers for the raid setup i use and punkbuster i have 24 one of which is taskmanager. (to see what tasks im actually using lol)
if you suspect that theres something wrong you should run some online scans with a reputable antivirus (you should NEVER have more than one antivirus installed btw) and some good antispyware software (lavasofts adaware, spybot search and destroy)
as fo the naked asian pensioners, dont complain Kes ahs to pay to see that.Last edited on Tue Mar 18th, 2008 07:42 pm by -]K6[-Grimm

Just download this great small tool from microsoft called Autoruns (it's free).
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/systeminformation/autoruns.mspx
Execute it and choose at options to hide Microsoft entries. Then you'll have a clear picture of what's going on in your pc. (Boot, services, processes etc) You can also disable or even delete whatever seems suspicious.

Theres also process explorer available on microsoft technet i dont have time to look for the link atm. most of the functionality to do what both of those programs do is actually integrated into windows in one form or another....
forget the Hide Signed Microsoft Entries though as even some of these are probably better off disabled, and some of the unsigned processes may be system critical, if your unsure as to what a process is in the first place you shouldnt really terminate it. oh and whatever you do dont shut down the punkbuster services as these will not start automatically on game launch
I will say that i use neither of these programs though, I edit that stuff at registry level manually and certain microsoft features under xp dont even make it onto my windows cd!
