Couple of points:

32 bit operating systems cant map memory over 4 gb, this includes your video ram, it can sometimes cause issues.

If the system runs a dual channel ram setup then the modules should really be of the same type and brand, although not always necessary. if you cant find ram thats the same then it would be better if you could find ram with the same specs including timings as what you allready have than buying some random sticks.

Ted myself and bri all run corsair xms2 6400 cl4 ram £35 to £37 for 2 x 1gb strips

the cl5 version of the above ram runs at about 33 quid for 2 x 1gig strips and you can buy 2 x 2 gig strips for around 70 quid.
